Content

A general introduction to Person-Centered Psychotherapy and Carl Rogers—its nature and application—as well as the six conditions for therapeutic change and the practice of deep listening. We will engage in practical exercises, feedback sessions, and experiential work within both small and large group settings.

We will explore the “moments of movement” described by Rogers, as well as “magical moments” (Santos, 2020), the I-Thou relationship, congruence, confrontation, and the role of personal knowledge in psychotherapy.

The focus will be on empathy as a mode of learning and dialogue, and on the concept of “As-If.” We will address Rogers’ core premises and the principles of humanistic psychology, as well as the phenomenal field and the nature of the self—identity, the “No,” and the “Q-Sort.”

We will work in triads, dyads, and encounter groups.

We will address Rogers’ personality theory and its implications for psychotherapy, examining the essential conditions of the therapeutic process as both necessary and sufficient. We will explore the distinctions between small therapy groups, small encounter groups, and large encounter groups. The psychotherapist will have the opportunity to explore their own strengths and weaknesses—identifying factors that may either hinder or foster excellence in therapy—and to explore empathy in depth, as well as learn about the different types of empathy.

We will assist you in building your personal portfolio as a therapist—focusing on both the process and the content of your learning journey. We will explore individual psychotherapy from the perspective of Person-Centered Psychotherapy, including the role of personal self-disclosure within the therapeutic context. We will provide an opportunity to analyze your personal anamnesis and key aspects of your therapeutic practice. We will examine strategies for working with “difficult” and “highly resistant” clients. Furthermore, we will explore the role of spirituality in psychotherapy and in the life of the psychotherapist. Finally, we will address the role of diversity in therapeutic practice, as well as within small and large encounter groups.

We will explore the functions, roles, principles, and guidelines governing clinical supervision. We will also address different models of clinical supervision, as well as contextual factors—such as burnout—related to clinical supervision. We will conduct demonstrations and practice sessions, and participants will have the opportunity to practice supervision with their peers.
